Henri-Frédéric Amiel (1821-1881) was a Swiss moral philosopher, poet, critic, a professor. Orphaned at a young age, he traveled Europe. Though he fostered friendships with some Europe’s top intellectuals, he never attained the status as a top philosopher during his lifetime.

However, after his death, his book Journal Intime (“Private Journal”) became widely circulated in Europe and was later translated into English. Britannica calls is “a masterpiece of self-analysis.”
