Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was the 16th President of the United States. His election to the presidency hastened the American Civil War because of his determination to end the expansion of slavery. He was prone to fits of depression throughout his life, including his time in the White House. Yet, he said some of the most inspiring and noble words ever uttered in American history.
