You are a one-in-Trilion miracle

I had the good fortune back in 1996 to see Neale Donald Walsch, author of the Conversations with God books, live at Unity Temple on the Plaza in Kansas City. This was at the time when his books and his story had become something of a phenomenon. The first book in the series is one of those synchronicities for me. It came along just at the right moment in my life with just the right message.

Neale ended a wonderful evening with a stirring story about us being all sparks of God. He relayed a time when God came to all the sparks and asked for a volunteer to come to Earth as a hideous person, but God promised that the net effect of the lesson would be good for humanity.

All the sparks were hesitant; not sure they wanted to go embody this hideous individual. Finally, a little spark way in the back raised his hand and said he would volunteer on one condition. God told him to name his condition.

"From your description of this person's life and actions" the little spark said, "I can imagine he is going to be despised and reviled by everyone."

"Yes.," agreed God.

"Further, I assume he's going to involved in such evil that he is going to forget who he really is and could lose himself in the evil."

"That's very likely," answered God.

"Then," said the little spark, "I will volunteer for this mission, if at the height of my evil power and darkness, you will all remind me who I REALLY am."

You see this little spark knew the same secret Shakespeare knew. All the world's a stage. And all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances. And one man in his time plays many parts. Wayne Dyer used to remind his audiences that we are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a temporary human experience.

What's the message here? We're not just these forms playing this role in this moment. We are something profoundly more. Some of us are here playing heroes. Some of us are here playing villains. Some of us are just here observing. The point is just like a play, we're all here in character to make the story work and to move the existence of the human experiment move forward here in space and time.

I've often said we are one-in-a-trillion miracles; here against every odd. That goes not just for you and people you love. It's true of every single person you meet all day every day. These forms of ours are like bubbles appearing only for a moment on top of the ocean and then disappearing. But, my friends, take courage. We are made of ocean not bubbles.

And our mission? Our mission is to be wise enough to see through the costumes and the circumstances we clothe ourselves with all the way to that divine spark within each of us. You may have noticed that Buddhists bow a lot. There's a deeper meaning to the bow than may be apparent to an outsider. When you bow to another person you are bowing to the Buddha within them. It's a way of saying, "I see who you are, but I also see who you REALLY are."

Let us see this miracle in ourselves and in each other. Let us be slow to judge and quick to remember that we, too, have played many roles. Let us find that little spark in the world around us and remind him, in his moment of forgetfulness, who he truly is.
