H.H. Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama is the recognized spiritual and political leader of the Tibetan people. In 1959, he was forced to flee to India when Chinese Red Army invaded. He set up is government exile there. He has been a strong advocate for non-violence and the environment on the global stage. He is the 1989 winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.
He was selected as the Dalai Lama as a child according to the traditional ceremony. He was able to correctly identify personal affects of this predecessor the 13th Dalai Lama. He was sent to the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, to be educated.
Tibetans believe he is the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama. He has often referred to himself deferentially as “a simple monk.”
