George Washington Carver (1864-1943) was an American botanist and inventor. He was known for his work in crop rotation to prevent soil erosion. He is, perhaps, forever linked to the peanut. He famously published a bulletin with 105 peanut recipes to encourage poor farmers to grow the crop for its diversity of use.

He taught at Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) for 47 years. In 1941, Time Magazine featured him on the cover, calling him Black Leonardo -a reference to his qualities as a kind of Renaissance man.
