About Your Bucket List

father and son on the sea on sunsetThis article went out to my free member newsletter audience about a year ago and received a lot of attention. The phrase "bucket list" has come into popular usage in recent years. In fact, it's become such a common place term that I'd be willing to bet you have you probably have one. The idea, of course, is that your bucket list is comprised of things you hope to experience or accomplish before you...well..."kick the bucket".Let me ask you a question. Do you find yourself mostly checking things off your bucket list or mostly just adding things on to it?For many of us, our bucket list is always growing, but our time and/or money to do those things is lacking.Even the mindset of a bucket list seems to breed procrastination. After all, these are things we hope to do before we leave this mortal coil and that's not happening...well...we hope for a long time.Buddha once said that the problem most people have is "They think they have time."We think things like:* "I'll take that Mediterranean trip when... the kids graduate from college."* "I'll start that business when the house is paid off."* "I'll take those art classes when work lets up a little."Sound familiar? Our bucket list represents those things we most want to do in this world. And yet, most of us put these experiences on hold...until the right circumstances appear... someday... hopefully... because we have time, right? It's not really the circumstances that are holding us back. It's really three things - time, money, and courage to act. Knowledge might be in there too, but we can get that or hire it.Our perception, and possibly our reality, is that we don't have the time or the money because we work a job for 40 or 60 or 80 hours a week. That job saps us, takes the best of our mind and energy. We do it because our parents did it before us and because it feels "safe and secure."A job is ONE revenue stream and it's a revenue stream that is very dependent upon the whims of your boss, the marketplace, even your age. It's also a revenue stream that requires you to keep trading your most valuable commodity - time - for enough money to survive, but not quite enough to move those bucket list items to the front of the line.Successful people have multiple revenue streams and revenue streams that rely initially on their own efforts and then on duplication of effort. The idea is do the work once and keep earning. Why is this important?Think about the owner or CEO of your company. He or she probably makes a very nice income. It's an income that allows them to have the money to do what they want. Here's the catch. They probably work more hours every week than you do. They have the money, but they still don't have the time. Their bucket list is growing just like yours. And if you work really hard, you can move up and be just like him or her.How do you get money AND time ? You must have multiple revenue streams. They must take advantage of duplication. That's the way you get the time and the money to experience your bucket list now, rather than having your grand kids roll you out onto the beach in Hawaii in your wheelchair at 80.I'm not painting this picture to depress you. I'm not saying go "fire your boss" today and risk everything. I'm saying have a plan in in the works to do it some day. Heck, maybe take your boss with you, if you like him.I'm painting a picture and sharing a message of awakening, like Paul Revere spreading the word. If you want to move your bucket list into the present or the near future, rather than the distant, hopeful, undefined one...the time to act is now.Remember when your crazy uncle or the neighbor next door told you last month they had this "business opportunity" they wanted you to take a look at? And your conditioning cringed at the thought of circles on a board or selling soap? That person was approaching you because they care about you. They care about you enough to let you share in their dreams. They care about you enough to share a possibility that could help you move your dreams from hope to reality.Maybe you politely told them things are really busy right now. Next month would be better... because you're waiting and hoping for that big break at work that get you 20 more hours of work each week, more stress, and further from your dreams.I'm not suggesting you sell soap. I'm not suggesting you become involved with the latest Internet scam or craze. I am suggesting that you need to find more sources of revenue. I am suggesting that the corporate world is not going to change and allow you duplicate effort or get paid for months at a time while you travel and mark things off your bucket list.Maybe our conditioning about what our neighbor or our crazy uncle are working to do is wrong. Maybe they're onto something and we need to listen. Maybe we need to open our minds and understand that the whole job thing was just a type of conditioning we were raised to believe in as the pathway to success, but that there are other, better paths. We unconsciously become the past until we choose a new future. These other paths knock out two of the three obstacles you have to living your bucket list right now - time and money. What about the third - the courage to take action?

  • Find your bliss - You already did. It's that bucket list.
  • Follow your bliss - That's the courage to take action and the open-mindedness to look at new possibilities.
  • Become your bliss - That's you walking on the beaches of the world, experiencing different cultures, pursuing your charitable passions because you had the time, the money, and the courage to make it so.
